Can you switch from your CG-friendly brands to CG-Safe natural curly hair products? But Liz, “These natural curly hair products are so expensive! I don’t have the budget. Please tell me budget-friendly curl hair products we can find in India.”  See if you relate to these other frequently-asked-questions.

I’m so confused and don’t know where to start. There are just so many curly hair products!

Start by making a choice.

Stop Shampoo and Use only CG products if you want to follow the true CG method.

CG-friendly products are not safe, specifically when you start your curly hair journey.

Get to know your hair.

It’s like dumping silk shirts in the washing machine and then wondering why what happened. Different curly hair types need different products. If you try the same products and method as even the best curly hair guru, the results may vary because of the difference in hair type or hair density level.

For example, low porosity hair hates too much product and heavy oils. If you are low porosity and do LOC method, then applying oil as a styling product will weigh down your hair. Likewise, if high porosity hair gets no refresh on non-wash days, then the hair will be dry and frizzy.

I am 3A, medium porosity with thick curly hair. Take the quiz on the Naturally Curly website, answer honestly to know your:

  • Porosity level (high/medium/low)
  • Curly Hair Type (wavy/2a/2b/2c/3a/3b/3c etc.)
  • Hair Density (fine/normal/thick)

You don’t find curly hair products in India easily 🙁

That is only partly true.  Anjana, a brilliant curly girl beauty has a fantastic post with List of curly hair products in India (for every budget). but I would proceed with caution if I were you because not all CG-friendly curly hair products are always CG-SAFE or CG approved. For example:

best hair products for black curly hair best products for curly frizzy hair best curly hair products natural curly hair products best drugstore products for curly hair best curly hair shampoo best curly hair conditioner curly hair products reviews, cg friendly

Don’t go by labels in the front. Go by the ingredients at the back.

Looking at ingredients and trying to figure out which is harmful and which is safe can be overwhelming. SO now there are TONS of websites to help you discern whether the curly girl product is CG Safe or not.

For example, just click on this image, it will take you to this homepage. Enter the ingredients and within seconds gives you a brief explanation of each ingredient and its role in the product too. How brilliant and convenient if you really want to follow the true CG method.

But Liz, why are these natural curly hair products so expensive?

You can buy Head & Shoulders, L’oreal, Pantene at Rs.10 or Rs.100 also, but you know what? Most of these commercial products have harsh chemicals that damage your curly hair. The organic natural curly hair products are sulphate-free, paraben-free, silicon-free and made with all the love and care your curly hair deserves.

My favourite products like Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel and so many others are made with natural extracts, essential oils, and mother Earth’s goodness. Plus, you throw in the international shipping costs curly hair products can be pricey.

Natural curly hair products are Worth the investment!

Think of it this way, my favourite conditioner, As I Am cowash conditioner is Rs.900 (bought from UK shippers NaturalisticProducts.UK)  lasts me 5 months If I divide the cost, it comes to Rs. 180 per month. I can cowash properly and safely with it!

Are you saying, you can’t spend Rs.180 per month for gorgeous curly hair?

Will curly hair products not harm my hair, washing it so many times?

With CG healthy hair journey, I have added more days between washes actually.

Before, I washed every alternate day to revive my dry curly hair with water. But now, my once-a-week wash day has the most products in my hair – not the scalp – my hair has the products. This helps sustain curly hair on the non-wash days. I also use only 1-2 products on refresh days.

Again, it is on my hair, not on my scalp. Besides, using wholesome CG-friendly products do not harm curly hair, good natural products encourage growth, health, and bounce!

Too much product will spoil my curly hair after some years, no?

Using bad commercial products, you might not even have hair after a few years. Ha ha. No seriously, CG APPROVED products save your curly hair from damage. With the natural curly hair products, your curly hair stays HEALTHY, no breakage. No silicones and parabens mean less or no hair fall!

So no, using good natural curly hair products will never spoil your hair, even after years of use.

If you have a dramatic change in your hair, you have age, hormones, stress, and lifestyle choices like smoking, alcohol, and drinking less water to blame.

I don’t have the time to use so many products.

Average  time for product application

  • Wash Day = 11-16 minutes or less!
  • Refresh Day = 7 minutes or less!

This is your hair, your body that’s made in God’s own image. You can make time a few minutes once a week to deep condition, wash your hair and style.

You can also give your children a snack and get a few minutes to refresh on non-wash days too!

We can do this, sister!

DIY products give me the same effect. Plus they are cheap.

That’s awesome! Although I started my CG journey with DIY products, if you ask me now, I prefer products over DIY. You can never fail with products. You can’t say that with DIY, right? Your homemade flaxseed gel may not give you any hold, your gelatin treatment can go awry.

The DIY hair masks need to be on your head for over 2-8 hours to get the same effect as ready-made hair masks. You know what? Deep conditioning natural products take less than 20 minutes! It’s funny how the same people who say “I don’t have time to use products”, also DIY – which takes more time to prepare, apply and wash.

You can spend a few minutes to care for your curly hair. If you want to reach your curly hair goals, there has to be an investment of time, money, and effort. Be consistent and then there will come a time when your hair is so healthy you don’t even have to refresh on non-wash days!

  1. Hey!

I’ve started my transitioning phase, and blogs like yours are a godsend! I was feeling hopeless with curly hair advise on non – Indian curlies, with no idea as to whether these products would work for me, most of which as you’ve mentioned are quite expensive to buy and then not suit you!

Transitioning is honestly hard, and also time consuming, but am determined ! Your routine looks quite nice, and I’ve been trying bits of it with mixed results. Could you tell me where you bought the righteous roots oil from since I can’t find it anywhere ? Thank you.

    1. Hey Arana 🙂 I am SO glad you’ve decided to embrace your natural hair. I am here for you, any time you need. You can watch my live videos on Instagram and chat with me, ask me anything. I am here for you. You can do this!

So, I get my stash from this UK website called Naturalistic Products now. I got the oil from there too. Here is a referral link which you can use to create an account and buy everything you need.

If you need help choosing products according to your hair type, we can discuss that too.

  2. Curly hair guru ?? You are my absolute fave Liz. I keep looking forward to your posts and reviews. And I am super keen getting those bouncy curls.

    1. Hi Shabana – Let’s chat on Instagram? I need to understand your curl type, porosity and everything before I can suggest anything. Thanks!

    1. Regular castor oil is very thick to remove and you need a sulfate shampoo to remove it. CG is all about avoiding sulfates, right? So that way. The community uses JBCO instead. That’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil which is way lighter and has more benefits than the regular castor oil

        1. Oooo sounds super exotic, this is the first time I heard about it. Which brand do you recommend? I’ll check it out.

  3. Hi Liz,I’m from India , Hyderabad.iam not able to understand my hair type and behavior and how it takes up the products I used.i have to say I’m sick of my extremely dry frizzy unruly unmanageable hair .its been a long time I stopped using sulfate containing stuff and switched to CG products, tried various expensive CG sulfate free shampoos and conditioners and gels.irrespective of whichever product i use, I feel like my hair is not taking any product in.i don’t know if I can call it low feels smooth and soft in shower when I apply the conditioner.but once I step out of it and my hair starts drying gradually ,the annnnnying frizz starts really really tired of repeated trying and failing.i wanted to go for some smoothening treatments but was scared of the chemicals and hair damage, but can find no other way.plsssss helpppp.i have no Instagram:(

    1. That depends on how your hair feels. I would encourage you to visit my “how to refresh” article to learn more
