Here’s another one-product-wonder! I received Dippity-Do Girls with Curls as a second prize winner from the its_leslie0513 giveaway in Nov 2017 – only goes to show giveaways are real, people! I digress, let’s get into My Dippity Do Curls Mousse Review featuring Leslie too because it’s one of her favourite products and she has curl-crush worthy hair! Ok, shall we?
How is mousse different from gel? Is it better?
Curly hair needs natural washing and styling products to retain moisture and sustain your curls for days! Right? So two of the most popular hair styling products are hair gel and mousse – according to Evergreen Beauty College, a mousse is a styling foam and a hair gel is goop and both have different functions and results too.
Residue: Sometimes, using a lot of gel creates white flaky residue; you don’t have that problem with a mousse.
Versatility: Mousse is also very versatile and works to enhance volume and shine. Not all gels have that function. In fact, some gels weigh your hair down! Those who want to cover their greys, mousse for coloured hair is also available – gels don’t have that function, not that I know of, at least.
Hold: You can choose gels depending on the hold you desire – light, soft, or hard hold gels. Mousse gives only a soft hold, which is not bad if you prefer soft hold curls like I do.
What is Soft Hold you ask? Defined curls without weighing your hair down for up to two days after application. Hard hold gels can go for more days, say, maybe 4 days without refresh.
If you don’t want volume, don’t use a mousse.
Packaging: This is a functional difference between a mousse and a gel. A mousse comes in an aerosol spray bottle, hence the foamy texture.
Hair Mousse Before and After
Day 3 Curls before refreshing and after. Sometimes they last and well sometimes they don’t 🤷♀️I just wet my hair with water (no shampoo or conditioner, just water) and applied @ddgirlswithcurls Curl Boosting Mousse by raking, smoothing and scrunching in the product. I let it air dry completely and scrunched out the cast with @righteousrootsoils and that#39;s it. No fluffing or picking 🤷♀️#textureshot #texture tuesday
How to use hair mousse?
Mousse is best used on wet or damp hair. It needs the water for better distribution.
Here are estimations to work with.
Short Hair – dollar coin
Medium Hair – golf ball
Long Hair – billiard ball
Remember to section your hair apply one pump of styling mousse to each section. Depending on how many sections you need, then rake in the mousse and scrunch!
You can either diffuse after styling to get better curl definition or let it air dry. If you have excess water dripping, then use a microfiber towel to scrunch out the excess water.
I don’t have a microfiber towel, can I use a t-shirt? Yes, this is a popular technique but you have to know it’s not just “any” t-shirt. It has to be a soft cotton t-shirt, “mulmul material” types. Otherwise, all that t-shirt scrunching will absorb your products and moisture also and then POOF! you get more frizz. So use your discretion for this method. Just saying.
My Dippity Do Curls Mousse Review
Purpose: Soft Hold, Volume, and Shine
Texture: Mousse like a shaving foam kind of texture
Fragrance: Mild floral (you can’t even)
Recommended for: Wavy and Curly Hair
How long will it last? The 6.8FL OZ or 200 ml bottle can last several applications. Say, 20 applications for medium length curly hair. That’s about 5+ months if you use it once a week. Not bad!
Does it give a cast? Yes! Just “SOTC”–scrunch with an oil or a curl cream to break the cast for softer curls.
Would I buy it again: YES!!
Why? The DD Curls Mousse gives me superb definition and I use it all by itself! That’s a win-win, specifically during travels, I can carry just one product for styling and I’m good.
- How much did I buy it for? I got it free, as a giveaway winner!
How do I use Dippity Do Girl With Curls Mousse
With wet hair, the DD Curls Mousse gave me shine and hold. On dry hair, it gave the hold, but not the shine so I recommend you use this or any mousse on wet hair only.
Shake the bottle like no one’s watching before you dispense the product for the application.
Remember you want that squishy sound when you squeeze and scrunch your hair because that’s when you know you got enough product in.
Wash day results with TGIN leave-in as a base and DD Curls mousse were not satisfactory. I got the best results with just the DD Curls Mousse on refresh days! However, Leslie uses this mousse on wash days also and it works so great for her! She uses the mousse by itself and for refreshes too but only if it was applied on wash day before.
Sandwich Style Method
#day4✔ Never refreshed since wash day and Sandwich Styling for the win 💥✌🏼 . . Line-up: @floracurl clay wash, @curlsmith_official and @ddgirlswithcurls Mousse sandwich-styled. . . ➰The Sandwich Style ➰ . . Yes, I coined it. So this is originally @honeyblondegigi method. You “sandwich” a mousse between your leave-in and gel. So use it after your leave-in and before your gel for super strong hold, better definition and #curlsfordays ‼🤪 . . Tag me if you try it! #sandwichstyle #honestliz ❤🙌🏽
The sandwich style worked really really well for me, as you can see.
You will have to try and see what works for you. Trial and error is the name of this curly-hair-game!
