Tried and tested, this pocket-friendly routine is a winning method for beginners. If you have no products to kick-start your natural hair care journey, You’ve got to consider this method!

  1. Detox
  2. Deep Condition
  3. Style

You’ve been using unsafe products or maybe all you use is water and oil. Either way, you want to start your journey with a clean slate.  Arata Shampoo is clarifying – Use my code HONESTLIZ for 20% off on orders over INR 999!

My Favorite way to Detox – Bentonite Clay Mask!! I do this shampoo mask every 2 -3 weeks. It remineralizes my hair, detoxes my scalp, encourages hair growth, defines better curl clumps, and overall promotes scalp and hair health! Love it! It’s super affordable too. Yes, I know you’re looking at the price right now, but that dabba is going to last you a year! So, on average that’s spending only INR 100 per month to have healthy, detoxed hair and scalp – which is super pocket-friendly if you ask me 🙂 Find the method detailed in this Bentonite Post.

STEP 2: DIY Deep Condition

After any shampoo, curly hair needs EXTRA conditioning that’s where a deep conditioner comes in and I do one weekly. So, if you don’t have a store-bought conditioner, don’t worry, you can achieve the same with DIY Deep Conditioning treatment at home! Remember to always check ingredients for product safety from this website called “Is it CG“. Only buy natural CG products. One of the most popular DIY creations I share with my Curl Friends is using coconut milk with just a tablespoon of raw organic honey. I started my CG journey with that and I know it works!

How to DC

According to hair science, hair pores stop absorbing products after a 30-minute timeline. So anything more is useless.

  • Detangle hair, divide into sections.
  • Apply the DC mask to each section and make twists.
  • Cover hair with a plastic cap or heat cap.
  • Keep for 20-30 minutes only
  • Wash with warm water first to make sure you get everything out.
  • Do a final rinse with cold water to close your cuticles – this gets hair more shine also.
  • If you DIY, DC before shampoo

Here’s how I apply my storebought deep conditioner

Coconut oil in the coconut milk quenches super dry curly or wavy hair in just one application! There are millions of recipes that include overripe bananas, avocado, hot oil deep conditioning treatments on YouTube.

Cook one up; experiment and alternate recipes for each wash day until you get proper products. Remember:

  • Too much moisture leaves hair greasy, sticky, limp, and too exhausted to curl.
  • Too much protein leaves hair brittle, dry, and prone to breakage.

Just make sure to alternate between protein and moisture deep conditioning treatments to maintain a balance.

DIY Rinses

Hands down, the best DIY protein treatment I recommend is doing weekly Rice Water Rinses! Read the full beginner’s guide to Rice Water Rinse here. When in doubt, do it after shampoo, and before your DC – deep conditioner (preferably protein-free DC)

This is like a mid-week cleanse kind of rinse. I do it when I feel scalp is too dry and itchy between wash days. You can just do the rinse,  wash it out with warm water and follow with your conditioner and style as usual. That’s it. If your hair is extra dry, then follow with a deep conditioner again. For this rinse, all you need is ACV- Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother) and warm water. That’s it! This big bottle of Bragg’s ACV will last you approx 8 months if you do a rinse every two weeks or so. Read the Complete Beginner’s Guide to ACV Rinse Here.

Microwave a wet towel and put it over your hair. And then put a plastic shower cap over it so the heat does not escape.

Never drench your hair with deep conditioners, just coat it.

Just because you made it at home and there’s a lot of it, doesn’t mean you feed it in your hair like some greedy person. It won’t work, especially if you have low-density hair. To avoid feeling greasy or yucky with DIYs, apply like a normal person. Just coat your hair with it,  don’t drench it! Pyaar se karo… you know what I mean?

STEP 3: Style

Option 1 >> with DIY Flaxseed Gel (FSG)

I first learnt about FSG from The Right Ringlets when I went CG in May 2017. That recipe was too diluted, watery, and never worked for me. A few months ago I stumbled across Sanne @curlsandblondies  recipe AND her FSG recipe is just BOMB! I tweaked Sanne’s recipe to make my own, and it works even better with more products if you have it. This gel works especially well for high porosity super thirsty curls.

My FSG Recipe:

  • Boil Flaxseed in water first until egg white consistency.
  • While this boils, make a paste with rose water and xanthan gum
  • Add this paste and all the extra things like curl cream and oils into the strained FSG.
  • Remember to strain the FSG while it’s hot! Once it cools, it turns into the gel, so straining will be harder.

Super Tips!

  • If you have wavy hair, apply this gel only to the ends to define your waves.
  • You can even massage your scalp with the plain FSG to heal your scalp of dandruff and to encourage hair growth.
  • Ideally, deep condition every wash, that’s every 4-5 days until your hair is healthy again.
  • Remember to clarify every 2 weeks to remove any oil buildup and residue from the gel.
  • For low/high porosity hair, do the DIY ACV rinse for a more manageable medium porosity hair.

Option 2 >Style with Arata Zero Chemicals (Cream and Gel)

Read Arata Review HERE

I recommend this Local, Indian budget brand for many reasons. The foremost reason is that it’s super budget AND safe to use! Their hair cream, and their gel is INR 599 Only! It will last you 1-2 months with regular use. You can use their hair cream on DRY hair also for a quick refresh on non-wash days. Discount code HONESTLIZ for 20% discount

Code applicable on orders above INR 999 only. I suggest you get both their hair cream and gel, it works well in humidity also! yes yes yesssss!

A Personal Opinion, if I may

I firmly believe that DIY methods are great but only if your hair is already great. It’s a low maintenance way to enhance what you already have going. However, if you are really struggling with sun/heat/ colour damaged hair, you may want to think of investing in high-quality store-bought products little by little to help you bounce back fast and easy! Once back, you can definitely continue your DIYs, but if you want results fast then… buy stuff. That’s all I am saying, you can agree or disagree with me, but this is just how I feel about it after my experience with DIY Vs.  Store-bought products.

If DIYs are so brilliant then why buy fancy products, you ask?

For me, I rather buy products because I don’t have to think twice about the ingredients. I can’t even tell when an avocado is ripe or not and those aren’t cheap. Remember, each expenditure adds up in the long run. Besides, if I had to make my own scalp massage oil with 11 essential oils, that’s expensive. You have to spend INR400-500 for each essential oil and even those come in a tiny bottle. I rather just get a readymade oil with everything in it, but that’s just me. With store products  I can achieve that protein-moisture balance without overthinking.

Anyway, until you get your proper natural products, you can try my no product routine and see what a difference it makes to your dry, damaged hair. Let me know if you do.
