Wondering what to do with unused or old hair products? The first step to follow the CG method for healthy hair is to switch your unsafe products for CG safe ones. When I suggest this important step for beginners, it’s not always willingly accepted. I understand you’ve spent hard earned money to buy curly hair products and throwing it away is no easy feat. That’s why I hope you find this article super helpful! Here are 24+ ways to repurpose and reuse old hair products:

Mix shampoo with baking soda to clean bathroom/wash basin/drains

Baking soda is also a mildly abrasive scouring powder. Mixing a little of your shampoo works as an effective paste to remove mould and gunk from your bathroom walls and wash basin. I recently discovered Apple Cider Vinegar is more effective with “the mother”. So I use my distilled/filtered ACV with baking soda as a natural Drain-O to completely clean the pipes!

Home Pedicure with old shampoo

Add a few drops of shampoo and fill your bucket with warm water. Soak your feet in this soapy liquid to give yourself a quick pedicure! When my children are in the bath and I have to watch them, that’s what I do! I add salt and essential oils into this soapy water and use this 5-10 minutes time to slow down and relax, scrub my feet clean while I’m at it too.

Moisten your band-aid with little shampoo

Yay! Here is a gentle way to remove your old band-aid. Now you don’t have to rip it away in a painful swift motion anymore.

Lubricate stubborn nuts and bolts with shampoo

The slip from the shampoo helps.

Clean your floors squeaky clean with shampoo

In a clean bucket, add your usual disinfectants and before you add water, add just one pump or two of your sulfate shampoo. Ingredients such as sodium sulfate laureth are commonly used in dishwashing and laundry detergents, anyway. So your unsafe shampoo diluted in hot or warm water will not only get your floors squeaky clean, but the synthetic fragrance ingredient will leave your house smelling so pleasant! This is exactly what I did with my OGX coconut shampoo and now it’s the WOW Apple Cider Vinegar shampoos turn.

Clean silverware, jewellery and other such precious metals

Use the warm-soapy-shampoo liquid to gently clean your gold or silver jewellery. Allow them to soak in the liquid for a few minutes. Then use a toothbrush to scrub them clean and get them smelling nice too!

Use Conditioner to Shave your legs

Using shaving creams or soap lather doesn’t give you a clear view, your conditioner will! Apply conditioner on your legs, hands, underarms wherever you want to shave. You can not only see better, but the conditioner also moisturizes your skin while it’s on it!

Soften rough woollen clothes with conditioner

Soak those rough sweaters and wool shirts in a warm liquid with conditioner. Let it soak for 5-10 minutes before washing them gently.

Unshrink shirts by soaking them in conditioner water for 30 minutes

Yep, it’s possible to use your unused or old hair products for this too! Here are so many other ways to repurpose your baddie conditioner as listed on Buzzfeed:

  • Use conditioner as cuticle cream
  • Gently wash your delicates/lingerie with conditioner
  • DIY dry clean your silk clothing.
  • Protect leather shoes from snow and salt.
  • Remove eye makeup.
  • Soften makeup and paint brushes.
  • Prevent tools from rusting.
  • Unclog drains.
  • Inject moisturizer in your bathwater.
  • Shine stainless steel.
  • Remove stuck rings.
  • Silence various squeaks.
  • Loosen sticky zippers.

DIY sensory craft with cheap old gel for your preschooler!

Apply alcoholic gels to clear acne/pimple/zits

Gels with drying alcohols are terrible for your hair. You want to avoid ingredients such as isopropyl alcohol on your fragile curly hair. Use the gel instead on a newborn pimple and let the alcohol sanitize the area, killing the zit.

Now you can reuse and re-purpose your old hair products to immediately switch to CG safe products guilt-free!
