How To Use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie

Section hair and apply product sparingly to damp or dry hair. Do not rinse out. Style hair as desired. For best results, use as a styling cream for twist-outs, braids and wash-and-go styles.

The Shea Moisture Smoothie is an amazing product and can be used in the following ways:

  • As a curl cream – Use it after a leave-in and before gel for LOC method, as I have for this above viral-video-worthy result.

  • As a leave-in – You can use it by itself on washed hair or even dry hair! You can even dilute it with warm water (for low porosity hair) or cold water in a flairosol bottle and spray on, and scrunch!

  • For refresh –  Use the Smoothie on dry hair to refresh non-wash days.

  • For Twist-Outs – This method is great if you were struggling to get curl clumps or if you wanted to  “train your curls“, specifically for Type 4 curly hair, please scroll down to see a video!

  • Braids – This is a go-to method to tame flyaways too. Apply the smoothie, brush and detangle hair and braid!

  • Baggy Method – According to Ro, a.k.a. Lotusflower078 The baggy method is a technique used for locking in your moisture. First, you apply a moisturizer to the hair and then wrap with a baggy, plastic cap, or saran wrap for an extended period of time. Most curlies will wear this overnight for maximum benefit. The baggy method is great for softer, moisturized hair, but it doesn’t need to be done every day. Your hair must have time to dry out completely. This method is done on clean dry hair you do not follow up with shampooing your hair. The next day let your hair dry and fluff. This method might weigh down 3A hair. The baggy method works best on 3C 4A 4B and 4cC textures. You must use this method sparingly. Only do this method once a week. Consistent use of this method is likely to cause hydral fatigue.

Curl Enhancing Smoothie For Waves

My daughter has wavy hair and we use just a smidge of this Shea smoothie either on wash day or to refresh her waves. The Shea smoothie gives her super defined frizz-free waves BUT if we use too much then it gets oily for her, as it does for my 3A curls. You can click on this image below or the link here if you want to learn about my top tips for wavy hair routine.

A word of caution about the Shea Smoothie

The Shea Smoothie worked better, for me, in the colder months. For winter hair care, using this product goes a long way to give your curls that extra hydration.

The key ingredients in this product are Coconut Oil, Neem Oil, Silk Protein, so it’s rich! If I use over one finger scoop, it weighs my 3A curls down and feels sticky and I have to shampoo it all out. This is part of the reason I was shampooing a lot in Nov 2017, remember that?

Anyway, here is a quick video of how I refresh with the Shea Smoothie on dry hair.

The Biggest Con

Any shea butter based products can “build-up” on your hair. This means it will build a barrier between your hair and your products. So the new products you may be using later can’t penetrate through and do their job optimally.

Therefore, you must use a strong shampoo like Pantene Lively Clean to strip out the shea butter out of your hair!

I don’t like to use shampoos so I do a Bentonite Clay Mask instead. This is a shampoo mask, so I have to condition after I wash it out but it helps to detox scalp and hair.

So overall, I use the Shea Smoothie maybe just once or twice a month. I use it on wash day, go 3-4 days with a refresh in between and then boom, clarify.

    1. Hey Shivi, I have explained about curl cream being a curl enhancer in my Cantu Curl Activator review. I also explained what a custard is in my KCCC review. The pudding is explained in the As I Am pudding review and now smoothie is here. Did you mean explain all in one post at a go?

        1. I suggest you read those review articles to learn how they function individually first. Basically, it’s all there to help you achieve more moisture, definition, shine, and curls for days! So, it’s up to you. What do you want? Do you want hydration? Then use smoothies. Do you want help with curl clumps? Use a curl cream. Do you want a definition? Get a custard or gel. Then pudding, soufles, everything is there to help you add more moisture to your hair. Depending on which brand you chose you may get added protein and other nutrients too – Brands like Bounce Curl, Flora Curl – they have more essnetial ingredients. Do you want it all? Then use a product cocktail combo to suit your need and hair type.

    1. Hey Narmada, Postpartum hair fall is so normal, stop freaking out!!! Stress actually causes more hair fall but I understand how you feel man, I went through it twice already. Come chat with me on Instagram, we can discuss

  2. Hi Liz, I bumped into your blog one month into my curly hair journey and have been reading up ever since. I love your blog and thanks for all the detailed instructions. I have low porosity hair and am still trying to figure out the best products to use for my hair. Both Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie OR Cantu curl activator are leaving residues. Any other cream suggestions ?

    1. Hey I recently tried Arata Zero Chemicals and their hair cream is nice. Low po hair should not use heavy things like this smoothie.

If you want to get Arata one then use my code LIZARATA for 20% discount.

I’ve used it a few times and I like it. I will review soon.

      1. He he..I live in the US and it is not available there…. But in general, my hair is needing a refresh everyday. I sleep in a pineapple and satin bonnet, but still the curl patterns have almost disappeared and I see frizz. So I end up doing a refresh(water spray+curl cream+gel) every single day. Any suggestions how to go longer between refreshes ?

        1. Shea Moisture is one of the biggest American brands! You can find this smoothie literally anywhere in the US. Also, if you need refresh daily then your wash day products have a serious problem. Come chat with me on Instagram and we can figure it out, no problem.

  3. Hi Liz! I’ve been following the cg method for 2 weeks now, andyour article give me so much hope!

I’ve chemically straightened my hair for over 8 years now, and I’m growing them out. I got a haircut but some
    Ends are still there.

I’m using the Shea Moisture line to start off with and following videos on YouTube.

    I’m facing the following issues:
    1. I have scalp psoriasis and I have to wash my hair every third day or else my scalp flares up and causes too much flaking. I use Shea moisture shampoos only

    2. After I wash and condition, I use the smoothie, and then curl soufflé . Hair is okay on wash day but the 2nd day it’s a frizzy mess! My hair is about the same length as yours

    3. Do you suggest I replace the Shea moisture soufflé with KCCC? I really need some definition in my curl pattern. Are there any other gels that you suggest?

I am type 2c, 3a and have low porosity hair. I would appreciate any help you can offer!
