If you’ve been looking for a homemade curly hair gel that’s inexpensive, moisturizing, lightweight, and surprisingly effective, let me introduce you to okra gel.
I never imagined I’d be standing in my kitchen saving the tops of okra just for my curls. If you had told me that five years ago, I would’ve laughed. But after trying countless DIY recipes—from flaxseed to rice water—this is the one I keep coming back to.
I know… it sounds unusual. Most people know okra belongs in a curry, not their hair.
I thought the same thing until I tried it. Now it’s one of my favourite DIY styling products because it gives me something I struggle to find in commercial gels:
- Lightweight definition
- Soft curls
- Incredible moisture
- Zero crunch
- No sticky residue
And the best part? Once your hair dries… there’s no smell. If you’ve already tried my DIY Flaxseed Gel recipe, I think you’ll enjoy comparing the two.
Why Use Okra Gel on Curly Hair?
Many people use okra as a deep conditioning treatment and rinse it out. I wanted to know: Could it work as a styling gel instead? The answer surprised me.
Instead of rinsing it away, I layered it over my leave-in conditioner and styled exactly as I would with any commercial gel.
The result? Soft, defined curl clumps with lots of movement. Unlike heavy styling creams, this gel never made my hair feel coated. Instead, it helped my curls stay together while remaining incredibly lightweight.
Who Is Okra Gel Best For?
I especially recommend this DIY if you have:
- Fine curly hair
- Low-density curls
- Low porosity hair
- Hair that gets weighed down easily
- Anyone wanting more volume and softness
How to Make Okra Gel
One of my favourite parts of this recipe is that it’s almost zero waste.
Instead of using the whole vegetable, I save the okra tops and caps—the parts most of us throw away while cooking.
Ingredients
- Okra tips and caps
- Filtered water
Method
- Add the okra pieces to a saucepan with water.
- Simmer until the liquid becomes thick and slippery, almost like egg whites.
- Strain while still warm.
- Allow it to cool completely.
That’s it. No preservatives, fragrance, complicated ingredients.
Why Is My Okra Gel Green?
Don’t worry if your gel looks different from mine. DIY recipes are never identical.
If your gel is a darker green, you probably used the entire okra instead of just the tops.
I’ve never personally noticed it staining my hair, but I’d love to know your experience.
How I Apply Okra Gel
I always apply it after my leave-in conditioner or curl cream. Think of it exactly like a regular styling gel. You can also apply it as a one and done styling product on clean washed hair.
Its job is to:
- Hold curl clumps together
- Improve definition
- Reduce frizz
- Lock in moisture underneath, adding softness
It isn’t a replacement for moisture but seals the moisture you’ve already added.
Why My Low Porosity Hair Loves It
Low porosity hair usually struggles with heavy products. They sit on the surface instead of absorbing properly. Okra gel feels completely different.
It leaves my curls:
- Softer
- Shinier
- More bouncy
- Lightweight
- Full of movement
Even when I use a richer leave-in underneath, my curls never feel overloaded.
That’s why this has become one of my favourite DIY stylers.
Okra Gel vs Flaxseed Gel
I’ve made both many times. If I had to choose only one…I’d pick okra gel. Here’s why.
| Okra Gel | Flaxseed Gel |
| ✔ Extremely moisturizing | ✔ Slightly more hold |
| ✔ Doesn’t flake on my hair | ✔ Excellent refresh product |
| ✔ Easier to strain | ✔ Can flake if too much is applied |
| ✔ Lightweight finish | ✔ Slightly more time-consuming to strain |
| ✔ Adds lots of shine |
I still love flaxseed gel. But for weekly styling? Okra wins.
Does Okra Gel Smell?
This was my biggest concern. Freshly made, it reminds me of crushed leaves. It actually brought back childhood memories of making pretend meals outside with leaves and flowers. Once my hair dries… The smell disappears completely. Exactly how I like it.
How Long Does Okra Gel Last?
Because this recipe doesn’t contain preservatives, I make small batches only. I recommend:
- Using it immediately
- Or refrigerating it for up to 2–3 days
Fresh DIY products usually perform better anyway.
My Final Thoughts
Sometimes the simplest ingredients surprise you the most. Okra gel has become one of my favourite DIY styling products because it gives me everything I want:
- Moisture
- Shine
- Soft hold
- Volume
- Lightweight definition
Without expensive ingredients or complicated recipes. If you’re someone who enjoys experimenting with natural curly hair care, this is definitely worth trying. And if you do… Come back and tell me whether you’re Team Okra or Team Flaxseed. I’d genuinely love to know.
FAQs about Okra Gel
Yes. Since it’s primarily a moisturizing styling gel, many curlies can use it regularly. Just make fresh batches often because it doesn’t contain preservatives.
Absolutely. My coarse, low-porosity curls respond beautifully because it hydrates without feeling heavy.
For soft hold, yes. If you need very strong hold or humidity protection, you may prefer layering like my 123 gel method with a stronger gel on top.
There’s no strong scientific evidence that okra gel directly speeds up hair growth. What it can do is reduce breakage by keeping curls moisturized, which may help you retain length over time. Are you looking for hair growth tips? Download my FREE hair growth guide here.
No. Once my hair is completely dry, I don’t notice any lingering smell.
