FRIZZ. Isn’t that the biggest curly hair problem? Solve this problem with the LOC method for your thick coarse curly hair. I do not recommend this technique for fine hair or low density hair. You can checkout my Mousse Tip here instead! Anyway, here’s the thing: Frizzy Hair is NOT a hair type. It is a condition of hair.
This post is dedicated to the after-wash care of curly hair. Wavy hair folks with coarse thick hair can get in on this too. I have tried so many things to get my curly hair frizz free and looking good. I realized that just Shampoo/Conditioner is not enough.
Curly hair needs more of moisture to contain the frizz. So this winter the LOC method is the best after-wash care – let me know if you try.
What is the LOC method?
The name LOC, suggests the actual order of application of styling products. We style curly hair after wash much the same way you would apply a face cream after washing your face!
L- Leave-in conditioner
O- Oil
C- Cream
What makes the LOC method so awesome!
This method is especially great for those who have very dry curly hair like mine is. When you need that something more to control your dry curly hair, LOC method is the way to go.
- Contains FRIZZ
- Seals in all the moisture
- Keeps curly hair looking healthy for the days!
- Leaves your hair feeling softer, shiner, and bouncier.
Highly porous hair (typically after color treatments) use the LOC method
Medium porosity hair (hair that absorbs and keeps moisture easily try LO method
Low porosity hair (typically thick coarse virgin hair) try the LCO method for best results.

The LOC Method Steps
The LOC method is so simple. With the right products you can start doing it right away. High porosity curlies should do this for sure! Don’t know your hair porosity? Take this texture quiz to get a fair idea. Low porosity curlies try this only on wash day for extra moisture. If you do this on refresh days you will feel your hair is sticky and weighed down.
STEP 1: Leave-in Conditioner
Apply the leave-in conditioner on soaking wet hair NOT THE SCALP, just the hair. The leave-in helps you detangle and trap moisture from the water. See a budget leavein here.
STEP 2: Oil
The next layer is the oil. Do NOT apply the oil on your scalp. Just apply 2-3 drops of oil to your hair. Make sure you cover all your strands. The oil will seal in the moisture from the leave-in conditioner. It will also act as a protective barrier against pollutants (even swimming pool water!). Oil tends to make some hair look greasy, I know. So, use light oils. You could also use the ever-trusted coconut oil (if you are not coconut sensitive).
STEP 3: Cream
This is the last step in the process. Finish the LOC method by applying your fav curl cream in smoothing motion to your hair. You can use homemade flaxseed gel over this or hair spray if you prefer tight defintion.
Air dry or use a diffuser (it’s a curly hair essential!)
Conclusion
If your hair is color or bleached and you find that your curls dry out easily, try the LOC method! My natural hair is thick and coarse, and using these products leave it soft, and defined for at least two days after wash. Longer, if I use hair gel over it. If you have fine hair then replace the leave-in with filtered water, and use less amounts of the oil and cream for best results.
